Project: Cultural

Client: Tartu City Government

Location: Estonia

Year: 2023

Area: 20, 000 m2

Phase: Competition

The challenge was to create a city space that enhances rather than disrupts the cherished ambiance by the River Emajogi.

We aimed for a cityscape that remains captivating, rain or shine, even beyond the primary functions of the Library and Museum. A sheltered central street, flanked by the Museum and Library, forms the core.

This street defines the building entrances and serves as a social hub with cafes. To preserve the park-like feel of Kaubahoovi Plats, the Library’s eastern side is gently terraced, blending into the landscape. Buildings feature a timber facade, allowing filtered light to create a dynamic play of shadows, tailored to local conditions and internal needs.
