Taiwan Tower

Project: Cultural

Client: Taichung City Government

Location: Taiwan

Year: 2012

Area: 120, 000 m2

Phase: Competition

A series of competitions were conducted by the municipality of Taichung for the design of a landmark high-rise building. This Tower was conceived by the city authorities as a new symbol of Taiwan, housing also the Museum of Taiwan.

We used this as an opportunity to create a centre for the investigation of alternative energies, especially in a country that has a high level of technical know-how and high consumption of energy.

The 302 m tall tower incorporated additional energy-gathering systems - in particular wind power and solar power. A system of ‘blades’ were devised that simultaneously carry the energy apparatus and act as sun-breaking shields. These also descent to form an umbrella for the parkland site.
